SLOWLY AND SURELY

WITH AN ETERNAL WING

The Pen Theatre, Sun 30 April, 7pm

SLOWLY AND SURELY WITH AN ETERNAL WING lifts it’s title from queer icon Claude Cahun & their book of writing and photographs, Disavowals - Cancelled Confessions.

They write:

‘no point in making myself comfortable. the abstraction, the dream, are as limited for me as the concrete and the real. what to do? show a part of it only, in a narrow mirror, as if it were the whole? mix up a halo with spatters? refusing to bump into walls, bump into windows instead? in the black of night. until i see everything clearly, i want to hunt myself down. struggle with myself. who, feeling armed against their own self, be that with the va nest of words, would not do their very best if only to hit the void bang in the middle.’

The evening will hold readings and performances that honor and celebrate devotion within practice — devotion to bumping —wrestling —hunting for meaning, devotion to the void — to queer gardening practice —celebrating experimental, unfinished and messy works — considering the shared stage as a space for translation and ritual — loving on states of vulnerability and becoming. We may never be finished, but here we are, together, on the eve of Beltane — wrapped in these eternal, becoming wings.

The event was in collaboration with lee rae walsh, an artist-poet-photographer-teacher-facilitator-and-friend living on the sea in Hove. their work is sun-drenched and blurry, and happens in the hours of each little day. lately, they are writing love letters to claude cahun from the garden and publishing unfinished drafts of poetry that they perform on various stages, including the dinner table.
