Soil Recipe
Gather materials: green, woody, mineral rich, fibrous, anything that will break down. Cardboard, weeds, grass-clippings, coffee grounds, autumn leaves, seaweed, straw, food scraps, manuscript pages, manure, wood chips are good. Use what’s available. You may need to acquaint yourself with tides, baristas, people with horses, people with lawns, people with cars or carts. Layer your materials. Moisten each layer - dry material will not readily break down (soak cardboard first.) Think about order: weeds with seeds or roots can be put beneath cardboard layer if you don’t want them returning; straw is good on top as it keeps moisture in. Keep moist by watering often. Let cook for at least six months. Put your hand inside – if it’s cooking it will be warm. The soil is ready when it looks like soil.
